Currently there is no county ordinances surrounding industrial solar projects. There are no setbacks. These projects each over 1,000 acres can and will border your property with 8 foot fence. They surround your property with solar panels, lithium ion batteries, and wind turbines. If you are concerned about turning our farmlands into industrial complexes, you should attend with your questions and concerns. This project is proposing to create 160 megawatts of power and 63 megawatts of lithium battery storage in areas zoned extensive agriculture with inadequate fire department training or equipment to attend emergencies. None of energy will benefit Klickitat County residents. This is just one corporation of many who want to come take advantage of an unregulated county and ruin the culture and property values that residents hold dear. Think your property isn’t under threat of these projects? Think again. These projects are being permitted under a Conditional Use Permit in a county that currently has NO COMPLIANCE OFFICIAL.
March 16, 2021 Commissioners Dave Sauter and Dan Christopher voted to approve a moratorium to prevent any new utility scale solar projects that would link into the Knight Road substation. However, in May despite hundreds of testimonies from county residents urging commissioners to impose ordinances they have now all receded the moratorium and see it unnecessary to move forward with the residents request. They claim that the cost to impose ordinances would be millions and take several years. It should be noted that Douglas County imposed a moratorium shortly after Klickitat County receded their moratorium and within two weeks Douglas County has written and implemented ordinances for industrial solar projects. This is because ALL of their commissioners agree that these projects need regulation to protect their county's resources. Why did our commissioners change their tune? Week after week during the weekly Board of County Commissioners meetings they sit and remain quiet each time residents ask them why. These meetings are recorded and can be found on the county's website. You should view them for yourself and join us in demanding answers. Many corporations simply file bankruptcy to avoid paying damages. We need clear ordinances that protect our county from seeing this happen to our farmland.
In South Korea, 23 fires like these at battery storage facilities made headlines. Recent articles are published warning about these dangers. Currently none of the ordinances address who is responsible when accidents like these occur. We support solar that is done responsibly. Right now our ordinances don't adequately address explosions, toxic runoff, decomissioning practices, wildfires, emergency plans, flooding, or ground water testing. Let's not allow these corporations to govern themselves.

If corporations don't get what they want they go through Governor Inslee to get approval. This is wrong! Tell your representatives this agency needs to be removed! This takes the authority away from local government who we elected to serve our county. If the Governor is allowed to over rule why do we need county commissioners? RCW 80.50.090 reads that ordinances must be in place prior to a proposa
We need volunteers to help spread awareness. Many residents are unaware that their properties can be surrounded by utility scale solar projects.

So many people are still unaware that these projects are coming. Small farmers are losing ground necessary to continue supporting their families. We need to spread the word to prevent more economic casualties.
